British Embassy and Iron Maiden help earthquake victims (21/04/2009)
On 3 March, legendary British heavy metal band Iron Maiden performed in Costa Rica for over 50,000 fans as part of their Somewhere Back in Time World Tour. Their visit provoked huge press interest and ferment among fans, who came for the concert not just from Costa Rica but all over Central America. Ambassador Tom Kennedy, Trade Attaché Luisa Pastor and Political /Communications Officer Bruce Callow attended the show and met backstage with the Maiden team including manager Rod Smallwood. The Embassy told the band before their arrival of the serious earthquake that hit Costa Rica in January and that the Embassy was helping the British community raise $50,000 for affected schools during the course of 2009. The band kindly donated a number of items to be auctioned off to help this effort. This has generated great interest and we are organizing an auction of the items which include autographed programmes and posters and singer Bruce Dickinson's hat. We are committed to let the band know what their donation raises. And the involvement of Iron Maiden will certainly encourage others to help in the fund-raising campaign. So far $ 1,000 has been raised and articles from the band will be auctioned off at the Queen’s Birthday Party - QBP. If you want to collaborate please contact Bruce Callow.
