The British Embassy in Costa Rica has overall responsability for Nicaragua since the British Embassy was closed in Managua in 2004.
 
Relations between the UK and Nicaragua go back over three hundred years and the two countries have particularly strong cultural ties in Nicaragua's Caribbean coast region.

The British Ambassador and other Embassy staff make regular trips to Nicaragua to maintain close links between the two countries.

There is no British Embassy in Nicaragua but you can contact the British Honorary Consul in Managua in the event of an emergency (details below).

Development work

The Office of the Department for International Development - DFID closed its Managua office in April 2009 but has committed to maintaining its programmes in Nicaragua for the amount of £ 4 million a year until 2011.

The Nicaragua programme will be managed from the DFID Caribbean Office in Barbados and will be delivered through partnerships with the World Bank and other development partners.

Nicaragua has been reclassified as a middle income country and as of April 2009 will no longer receives direct budget support from the UK.

The British Embassy supports small projects in Nicaragua with a particular focus on the Caribbean Coast region where it has been undertaking a Prison Reform Campaign to improve conditions for juvenile and women prisoners.

A website has been created to draw attention to this issue and to help raise funds to help the prisoners. Bruce Callow organised to raise some money.

Wardens Network

The British Embassy in San Jose has made a special effort to create and maintain a Warden's network in Nicaragua since the British Embassy in Managua closed in 2004. The Warden network is made up of volunteers ready to assist the Embassy with communications in case of emergencies and live in various departments around the country.If you would like to learn more about the wardens network, please contact our Vice Consul in San Jose, Sheila Pacheco.

 

Nicaraguan British Association

Nicaraguan British Association

The Nicaraguan British Association is a non-profit organisation dedicated to the promotion of social, cultural, educational, commercial and touristic activities between Nicaragua and the UK. The Association which is based in Managua, was founded in 1964 and welcomes all nationalities, particularly Commonwealth citizens.

The Association welcomes new members to the organisation so that they can benefit from the diverse range of activities offered which include fund raising activities for communities in need.

In co-ordination with the British Embassy in San Jose the Association is currently involved in fundraising drives to support the Bluefields Hospital Paediatric Ward and juvenile prisoners in Bluefields jail.
