Nicaragua Prison Reform Campaign (02/09/2009)

Nicaragua Prison Reform Campaign

The British Embassy in Costa Rica has been involved in prison reform campaigning over the past four years to improve conditions in Nicaragua's Caribbean Coast prisons. Over the past two years the Embassy's work has been focused on improving conditions for juvenile and women prisoners. Thanks to the campaign important improvements in the living conditions of the juvenile and women prisoners have been made in the coastal prisons of Bluefields and Puerto Cabezas.

Our campaign was featured in the FCO´s 2008 Human Report and has received support from a variety of sources apart from the FCO, including Leeds University Students Association, a benefit concert in Canada, MP Peter Kilfoyle as well as the Canadian International Development Agency. To raise further awareness about the issue, as well as more funds for projects, a benefit DVD is being released on 8 September. The DVD features music, videos and other special features.

To learn more about the campaign please contact Bruce Callow.
